Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Services

Transform your energy infrastructure into a strategic asset. AGBESS helps organizations leverage Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) to reduce energy costs, generate new revenue, improve resilience, and maximize the value of existing energy resources.

- What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?

Power Beyond Backup

Your battery storage, generators, building systems, and other flexible energy assets can do more than support daily operations. By connecting these resources through a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), organizations can unlock additional value while helping support a more reliable electric grid. Our VPP coordinates eligible energy assets with utility and wholesale market programs, enabling participants to reduce energy costs, generate new revenue through demand response and grid services, and maximize the value of their existing infrastructure.

A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of distributed energy resources (DERs) that are coordinated through an intelligent software platform. Examples include:

A VPP combines their available capacity so they can operate as a coordinated energy resource, responding when the grid experiences high demand, elevated prices, supply constraints, or other reliability needs.

Unlike a conventional power plant, a VPP does not rely on a single centralized facility. It uses existing energy assets located across participating sites to provide flexible capacity when it is needed.

How VPP Services Work

Our distributed energy platform connects energy users with demand response, demand charge management, battery monetization, carbon reduction, and other grid-service opportunities across wholesale power markets in the United States and Canada.

- How Can I Benefit?

Demand Response vs. Peak Shaving

Peak shaving is managed primarily to reduce your organization’s utility costs. A battery or flexible load responds when your facility approaches a costly demand peak.

Demand response is performed in response to a signal from a utility, grid operator, or market program. Participants temporarily reduce demand, shift electricity use, or dispatch eligible energy assets in exchange for compensation.

A Virtual Power Plant brings these strategies together by intelligently coordinating eligible energy assets to respond to changing grid conditions and market opportunities. This allows organizations to optimize energy performance while maintaining operational priorities and backup power readiness.

By participating in a Virtual Power Plant, organizations can:

Organizations retain operational control by defining participation around critical loads, backup power requirements, production schedules, and other operational priorities.

By delivering measurable results, AGBESS helps quantify financial returns, operational improvements, and sustainability outcomes, enabling organizations to clearly demonstrate the value of VPP participation.

- At a GLANCE

Create More Value From Virtual Power Plants

Reduce Peak Demand
Discharge stored energy when facility demand is highest to reduce exposure to utility demand charges.

Generate Grid-Service Revenue
Earn compensation for reducing load or supplying stored energy when utilities and grid operators need additional capacity.

Improve Energy Costs
Use energy data and automated controls to better understand consumption, anticipate peak periods, and optimize system operation.

Maximize Existing Infrastructure
Create additional value from batteries, generators, and controllable loads that are already serving your facility.

Support Grid Reliability
Reduce demand during periods of grid stress, helping balance electricity supply and demand without interrupting critical operations.

Advance Sustainability Goals
Shift energy use away from high-emission periods and track avoided carbon emissions associated with qualifying demand response participation.

Maintain Control of Your Operations

VPP participation should complement, not interfere with, your primary operational responsibilities. Before enrollment, the available assets, critical loads, operating schedules, backup requirements, and acceptable response strategies are evaluated. Participation can then be structured around site-specific constraints and program rules.

For battery systems, this may include establishing:

This planning helps balance revenue generation with resilience, reliability, and equipment performance.

Energy Assets That May Be Eligible

AGBESS can work with a range of distributed energy resources and flexible loads. Program eligibility, dispatch requirements, compensation, and permitted technologies vary by utility territory and electricity market.

FAQ

No. VPPs can coordinate many types of distributed energy resources, including generators, HVAC systems, industrial loads, pumps, refrigeration, electric vehicle charging, and other flexible equipment. However, BESS assets can provide rapid, controllable response and may expand the number of available value streams.

Depending on the market, participants may receive compensation for committing available capacity, reducing electricity use during events, dispatching stored energy, meeting performance targets, or providing other qualifying grid services.

The frequency, duration, notice period, and performance requirements vary by market and program. These requirements should be reviewed before enrollment.

Yes. Battery capacity can be allocated among backup power, peak shaving, demand response, and other applications. The operating strategy should maintain an appropriate reserve for critical loads and resilience priorities.

No. Revenue depends on location, program eligibility, available capacity, market conditions, enrollment terms, and actual performance. Earnings estimates should be evaluated as projections rather than guaranteed results.

Yes. Multiple sites and energy assets may be managed as a portfolio, subject to local program rules and eligibility requirements.
